Today I hosted a kid’s birthday party in my studio – this is a regular thing – and, for the most part, we played with my scraps. My “good” scraps are the stuff that haven’t been mixed into shades of mud yet. There’s often chunks of cane, bits of blends, layers of good but slightly mixed regular clay. All sorts of crumbs and pieces. I make a LOT of scrap clay and I have some regular go-tos for using it apart from letting the kids make creatures out of it.
Sometimes I make small combo canes from cane ends like this tutorial from Sculpey although I don’t veneer them over wood beads. I use scrap for the bead guts too.
This tutorial doesn’t need fancy canes to make it work. Pick an assortment of pleasing colours. Mix a few others from them. Make some simple stripe or jelly roll canes and some small black and white ones for graphic emphasis. Go from there. And, if you don’t have coordinating colours, tie them together with the use of a background colour or outline colour like black.
