DIY Ceramic Pottery Gift Tags – Handmade Clay Tags with Personalized Messages

December 3, 2025 by Shellie Wilson

There’s something timeless about the little details that go into gift-giving. Wrapping paper, ribbon, and bows all do their part, but nothing feels quite as personal as a handmade gift tag. These ceramic pottery gift tags aren’t just labels—they’re little keepsakes your loved ones can hold onto long after the wrapping paper has been recycled.

Made from clay (pottery clay or air-dry clay), these tags are stamped or carved with well wishes like Happy Birthday, With Love, Thank You, or even Love, Santa. They add that handcrafted charm you simply can’t buy in a store. And the best part? They’re surprisingly easy to make at home, even if you’re a beginner.

Why Make Handmade Ceramic Gift Tags?

If you’re already working with pottery or air-dry clay, this project is the perfect way to use up scraps. But beyond being a fun craft, these tags are:

  • Personalized: Stamp out the exact message you want—be it a birthday wish or a holiday note.
  • Reusable: Unlike paper tags, ceramic ones can be kept, displayed, or even repurposed as ornaments or labels.
  • Eco-Friendly: A more sustainable choice than disposable tags, especially if you use natural twine or jute string.
  • Beautifully Versatile: Glazed or left raw, rustic or polished, they suit every occasion.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Clay (choose pottery clay if you plan to glaze and fire, or air-dry clay for an easy no-kiln option)
  • Rolling pin or slab roller
  • Small alphabet stamps (for crisp lettering) OR a pen nib/skewer for hand-carved words
  • Cutter or knife (to shape your tags—rectangles, ovals, or freeform)
  • Straw, skewer, or needle tool (to punch string holes)
  • Fine sandpaper or damp sponge (to smooth once dry)
  • Optional: clear or colored glaze, acrylic paint, or varnish
  • String, ribbon, or jute for finishing

Step-by-Step Tutorial for Clay Gift Tags

Step 1: Roll Out the Clay

Start with a slab of clay about ¼ inch thick. Roll it out evenly so the tags will dry without curling or cracking. If you’re using air-dry clay, lay down parchment or a silicone mat to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Add Sentiments or Messages

This is the fun part! Use your alphabet stamp set to press words into the soft clay. Try classics like:

  • Happy Birthday
  • Thank You
  • With Love
  • Get Well Soon
  • Congratulations
  • Love, Santa

If you don’t have stamps, carve the words freehand with a pen nib, needle tool, or even the tip of a bamboo skewer. Don’t worry about perfection—slightly wobbly letters add charm and authenticity.

Step 3: Cut the Tag Shapes

Once your words are in place, cut around them to create your tag shape. The easiest option is a rectangle with one clipped corner to mimic a gift tag. You can also make circles, hearts, or star-shaped tags for holidays.

Tip: Roll your slab, stamp your words first, and then cut the shape. That way, your lettering will be centered.

Step 4: Punch a Hole for String

Use a straw, skewer, or chopstick to create a small hole near the top of each tag. This is where you’ll thread your ribbon or string later. Make sure it’s not too close to the edge, or it could crack as it dries.

Step 5: Let the Tags Dry

  • For air-dry clay: Lay flat and allow 24–48 hours to dry fully. Flip them halfway through for even drying.
  • For pottery clay: Allow the tags to firm up before bisque firing in the kiln.

Step 6: Smooth and Refine

Once completely dry, gently sand the edges or use a damp sponge to smooth away any rough spots or raised clay from the lettering. This step makes a big difference in how polished your tags look.

Step 7: Finish with Glaze or Paint

You can leave your tags natural for a rustic, handmade look, or finish them off with:

  • Clear glaze: For a glossy, professional finish (kiln required).
  • Colored glaze: Add festive pops of color for holidays.
  • Acrylic paint + sealant: A quick way to decorate air-dry clay.

Styling and Creative Uses

These clay gift tags are so versatile you’ll find yourself making them for more than just presents:

  • Gift Wrapping: Add to birthday presents, wedding gifts, or Christmas packages.
  • Keepsake Ornaments: Write special dates and hang them on the tree.
  • Home Organization: Label jars, baskets, or storage containers.
  • Wedding & Party Favors: Personalize with initials or short messages for guests.
  • Garden Markers: Stamp herb names and thread with garden twine.

Tips for Success

  • Roll clay evenly to prevent warping.
  • Stamp words before cutting shapes—easier to center.
  • Make the hole slightly bigger than you think you’ll need (clay shrinks as it dries).
  • Keep a damp cloth handy to cover unused clay so it doesn’t dry out mid-project.
  • Make extras—you’ll always find a reason to use them!

Why This Project Makes the Perfect Handmade Touch

Store-bought tags are used once and tossed. Handmade ceramic tags, however, carry meaning. They show thought, effort, and love. A simple With Love tag tied to a jar of homemade jam or a Thank You tag on a teacher’s gift feels heartfelt and unforgettable.

And for those who love practical crafting projects, these tags tick all the boxes: quick, affordable, eco-friendly, and beautiful.

Whether you’re a pottery enthusiast looking for small projects to fill the kiln or someone who simply loves handmade details, these DIY ceramic pottery gift tags are a wonderful way to elevate your gifting. They’re easy to make, endlessly customizable, and sure to bring a smile to anyone who receives them.
