Tutorial: Pressed Flower Trinket Dish

May 21, by Elaine Robitaille. 2 Comments

This bowl is a variation on a popular theme – making small dishes and bowls from polymer clay. You could do the same from air dry clay but this tutorial uses oven bake clay, flowers to create an impression and craft paint to highlight the details.

In the tutorial the maker comments about sanding it or sanding it more. An alternative is to texture it lightly so it doesn’t need sanding. You can texture the part of the bowl slumping in the mold by using a rougher or textured bowl for the form. Another alternative is to sprinkle a little salt on the plain side of the bowl before you slump it in the form. That way both sides are textured and any sanding needed will be minor, to remove sharp edges.

Thanks for sharing. I love your comments about adding texture to hid flaws.

Sanding only fixes so much so adding light texture with the edge of sandpaper or a scotch pad or salt to raw clay can cover up small creases, nail marks and so on.
