A non-cane project for extruders is this simple one: a string covered pen. Extruding long, even strings almost endlessly is one of the best extruder usages. You can use the strings for faux filigree, writing words in clay, hair for simple sculpts, mini spaghetti, little balls of clay yarn… all sorts of idea. Marie Segal even knitted little sweaters from an extruded mix of Premo and Bake and Bend once upon a time.
For the pen project above, colour selection matters – pick colours that go well together or make interesting combinations to make your ribbon. With a little fussing, you could use a different combination for a few of the strings like laddered or checkerboard extruded pieces. Which means, of course, I couldn’t stay away from the idea of canes very long 🙂
