Matte Black and Metal Foil on Clay

November 12, 2018 by Elaine Robitaille

In my internet wanderings this morning I saw this piece by syndee holt for Sculpey. It’s deceptively simple – texture adds interest while making all of the little imperfections less noticeable and the metal foil stands out elegantly from a matte black base. This would be a good, basic introduction to polymer clay jewellery making.

On a side note, the Soufflé is starting to grow on me. The texture is lovely and doesn’t seem to pick up fingerprints and crumbs as easily while you work with it. And it bakes up just as reliably as all of the other Polyform products.

Etsy Feature – Birds and Branches Pottery Border Roller

Nature-inspired pottery never goes out of style. There’s something so calming about adding organic details like leaves, vines, or little bird silhouettes to clay. That’s why this Birds and Branches Border Roller instantly caught my eye—it’s the perfect way to roll a story of nature right onto your pottery.

What It Is

This roller is a 7cm patterned border tool designed for use on pottery clay, ceramics, polymer clay, or even air-dry clay. With one smooth roll, you can create a repeating border of delicate branches with perched birds, adding detail and charm without hours of hand-carving.

It’s versatile enough for both functional and decorative projects and works beautifully whether you’re new to clay or have been pottering away for years.

Why Makers Will Love It

  • Effortless Detail: No need for painstaking hand-drawing—just roll and the design appears.

  • Organic Inspiration: Perfect for pieces that celebrate nature, from mugs and bowls to trays and vases.

  • Time-Saving: Get clean, even borders in seconds—especially handy for batch-making.

  • Adaptable: Works with wet clay, leather-hard surfaces, and even polymer clay slabs.

Inspiration Ideas

  • Use the roller around the rim of mugs or bowls for a subtle but charming detail.

  • Roll across slab-built trays or platters to create a centerpiece design.

  • Combine with earthy glazes for a rustic woodland vibe, or highlight with underglaze for crisp details.

  • Try it on tiles, ornaments, or coasters for a beautiful, nature-themed collection.

Why This Roller Belongs in Your Toolkit

Surface decoration is where your pottery really comes alive. Tools like this Birds and Branches Roller make it easy to add character and personality without slowing down your creative process. It’s one of those small investments that pays off over and over with every piece you create.

You can find it here: Birds and Branches Pottery Border Roller on Etsy.

This post is part of my Etsy Feature series, where I spotlight handmade treasures and clay tools that make crafting both easier and more inspiring. And honestly? This roller is the kind of tool that transforms a simple piece into something that feels timeless and poetic.
