Clay Acorn Ornaments

November 9, by Elaine Robitaille. 3 Comments

I’ve occasionally made acorn beads when requested – both cane slice ones like these and just acorn shaped beads – but it’s always a little weird. Acorns aren’t common where I live. Pinecones by the bucket full, yes, but not acorns. Which means this clay acorn craft by Stephanie of Garden Therapy would require I make the caps, as well, but I’d probably go ahead and do that. These ornaments are pretty cute and, since they’re made with air dry clay, pretty simple.

You could decorate your mini-Christmas tree with these use them for your fall decor. And yes, you could do these with polymer. Make the nuts and then glue them into the caps with something stronger than hot glue or test an acorn cap to see if it flakes apart in the oven. If it makes it, then bake everything together in one go.

Looking for air-drying clay? We highly recommend Das Air dry clay, we have been using this product for over 30 years. Check out their Das White Air drying clay and their Terracotta Air drying clay version for a natural pottery feel. For larger crafts we recommend buying your air drying clay in bulk

How do you make the caps?

In this post, the tutorial maker had used ones she collected from outside – she has oaks near her – but when I do them, I cut a round circle of brown clay using a circle cutter, fit it over the “nut”, and texture it. I have made acorns out of oven bake clay and when I did those, I baked the nut part first so that I could put the cap on and texture it without making a mess of the rest. I’d like to my site where I did this but it’s down at the moment.
