Some of my favourite polymer clay “hacks” from over the years:
- If your blade is becoming dull, really fine sandpaper (like the 2000 grit) will sharpen the edge
- Rubbing alcohol will soften your clay surface briefly and evaporate. Mineral oil will soften it for good. Use in moderation
- Along the same line: baking extracts and essential oils will soften AND scent your clay. Vanilla extract in miniature foods is fun
- Cutters are the best measuring tools for repeatable amounts of clay. Need a dozen identical sized balls? Use a cutter and sheet of clay
- Use your roller to flatten clay. It’ll save your hands. Slice a block, roll it, run it through your pasta machine
- Tuck soft canes in the freezer. Tuck hard canes in a cup of warm water
- Accordion folded paper makes a great tray to bake items like beads or other pieces that might roll
- Bake larger roundish objects (like ornaments) in paper cupcake liners
