Ginger of BlueBottleTree has a ton of good stuff on her blog. A recent post is her list of tips for newbies to polymer clay. I knew these – I prefer to use Vaseline to take clay off my hands to sanitizer – but they’re goodies for new clayers. My picture above is another: you probably have most of the tools you need to do things with clay around your house.
Accordion folded paper and old baking tins and roasters are the best for holding rolling things. I still use this sort of stuff 3 times a week, every week I work.

I use baby wipes, to wipe the polymer clay off my hands. It works very well.
