Here’s a neat Halloween craft idea to try that isn’t yet another pumpkin—because as much as I love them, sometimes it’s fun to mix things up. Instead, make a little sleeping bat, curled up in its wings. You can keep it tiny as a pendant for a necklace or keychain, or go larger and turn it into a spooky-sweet hanging decoration for your porch, mantle, or even the Halloween tree (yes, that’s a thing at my house!).
In the video tutorial, the bat is highlighted with shimmering mica powders to give it that eerie, moonlit glow. If you don’t have mica powders on hand, don’t worry. Regular acrylic paint works just as well—try layering black or dark grey for the base, then add subtle dry-brushed highlights in silver, purple, or even a touch of metallic green for a witchy vibe. Finish it off with a thin coat of clear glaze or varnish to give the wings a smooth, leathery sheen.
The beauty of this project is how versatile it is. String a few bats together for a Halloween garland, hang one from a doorknob to greet trick-or-treaters, or tuck a miniature version into party favor bags. If you make them flat on the back, they also work beautifully as magnets or pins. And since the design is simple, you can play with scale—giant sleepy bat for dramatic décor, or teeny tiny ones as charms.
