Like Katherine says in the tutorial: combining mediums is fun. I like when I can get my favourite hobbies to mix. In my case that’s wire and clay or electronics and clay or needlefelting and clay. I haven’t done much with resin but can definitely see the awesome mix and match possibilities. This ring tutorial is a nice sampling of resin and clay techniques in a simple serving size.

I haven’t done many polymer clay rings – I’m a little skeptical about how strong they’d be and I don’t wear rings as a rule – but this exact process would make a really nifty pendant.

* I’m also not implying well made clay rings are weak. Just that I break all sorts of clay things really, really often so tend to be paranoid about delicate pieces like this.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Roll Out the Clay

Step 2: Add the Texture

Step 5: Smooth & Shape

Run damp fingers along the rim and seams to soften rough edges. This is where your pot starts looking polished.

Step 6: Drying Time

Let your pot air dry for 24–48 hours (depending on the clay brand and thickness). Don’t rush this step—if the clay dries too quickly, it can crack.

Step 7: Sand & Finish
