One of the more esoteric techniques with polymer clay has definitely got to be mica shift. By careful manipulation of the clays that have mica particles in them you can create intricate, detailed designs… with smooth tops and no other colours. The shading and appearance of texture come only from the way the particles are compressed to show their light, shiny side or darker edge. This video tutorial from Jessama Tutorials goes over some of the details.
Since I work with Premo clay primarily, I find gold to be the simplest to get a good mica shift with or blends of gold to colours like peacock pearl. And because mica clays are essentially translucent clay with flakes of mica in them, they really take sanding and buffing well.
