People make insanely detailed miniatures using polymer clay. Here’s a fairly dedicated miniaturist’s approach to making leaves and plants.
You could use a cane for the individual leaves if it were a fairly subtle one. Most of the leaf canes I do are stylized but I’ve done some of the sculpting individual slices to use in larger sculpted pieces. By creating individual leaves and curing them before assembling a larger or more complex piece (the potted plant for example) you avoid squishing the tiny, detailed foliage.
