I’m a polymer clay cane freak. I make a lot of canes. Carol Greiser of PolymerClayShed does too! In her blog post she sketches (ha!) how she goes about putting together a hummingbird cane. This is similar to a post I wrote a while ago on mapping out a cane.
Symmetrical canes like flowers with the petals face on are simpler because the cane is basically a repetition of identical elements of similar size. Picture canes like the hummingbird are tougher since you have to plan elements and predict how much clay you’ll want to use. I usually work backwards by deciding how big of a cane I’d like and then go about guesstimating what percentage of that each “block” of colour in the picture is. I’m always interested to hear how others are going about their caning.
