This sort of texture tool is one I’ve made from polymer clay before – stick a button or other texture-y item to the end of a log of clay, bake, and voila texture stick. It’s a little more clever (and neatly done) with the strung buttons providing a method for the buttons holding on to the clay.
Like Jamey of Dabbles & Babbles, I tried a pottery class a few years ago and fell in love with mud. While I don’t do it as much as I do polymer clay, I’ve used a lot of my polymer clay tools with my pottery clay. What little contamination occurs is a matter of rinse – with the mud – or ignore – with the polymer clay – and let the kiln burn the crumbs off.
