I was looking for a project I had seen years ago – in a book, it turns out – about how to make a whistle from polymer clay. The search turned up some tutorials for how to do this is in earth clay for a ceramic whistle but the same instructions would work well with polymer remembering that you’d have to make your piece smaller right from the start. Ceramic clay would shrink a lot and result in the traditional small whistle or ocarina but polymer or standard air drying clay wouldn’t do that. The bonus with polymer, of course, is that you’d be able to cure your piece in your oven instead of a kiln.
The book, by the way, is Polymer Clay – Creating Functional and Decorative Objects by Jacqueline Gikow and it had a pile of truly great stuff in it including some fairly interesting projects that you don’t see often.
