Garie, from Singapore, teaches many children and is a prolific polymer clayer. He also shares many of his tips and findings as he goes. This post is about some of the tools he’s made from found pieces and clay scraps. One of the best reasons for making your own clay tools – completely aside from the cost factor – is that you’ll have a tool that fits your hand and accomplishes a specific task.
Old gift cards or other credit card like objects were one of the best cutting tools for soft clay in our younger kid classes. Toothpicks, coffee stir sticks, popsicle sticks, orange sticks, knitting needles and crochet hooks were some of our best texture making and detailing tools. Plastic coated electrical wire – of which I have access to piles of – makes booth great embedded bits as well as loop tools.
