The tutorial for this napkin ring uses air dry clay but you could substitute polymer clay and, voila, it works equally well. The shiny finish on the ring is from using mica powders to highlight the texture. You could use this to coordinate to whatever event or colour scheme you’d like. Use letter stamps to add names. For example little initials in a heart would be fabulous for a wedding version of this napkin ring.

Patti Kimle has a project up on the Sculpey.com site. It’s done with the new Polyform clay, Soufflé, but you could do it with any of them. The nicely faux-metal look of the bead cap or cones is achieved with mica powder, something I highly recommend most clayers have in their arsenal of goodies. You could make the same sort of cones to finish off the ends on a matching necklace.

Emily of Merrypad mentions how she made the tiny succulent pots for her recent wedding out of clay. Her walkthrough is based on the tutorial by Rachel at Transient Expression.

You get to combine the insane popularity of teeny tiny succulents and of faceted or rough EVERYTHING. Little handmade planters, cute plants and you could even customize your clay colours. Sounds like a pretty nifty favour idea!

Sorry for being absent guys! I had technology issues while I was out of town! I do have a little stack of goodness for the week though, as a result. And the out of town bit was fabulous and fun and relaxing.

This trick lets you add what appears to be two layers of different texture or design with one stamp or texture. There’s a background texture created with a low relief pattern stamp or tool and then a contrasting or higher relief design cut out. In the final items this creates a textured piece with two types of texture or design. A little antiquing or other surface decoration would enhance the raised designs.

Joan Tayler is a talented Canadian clayer from the west coast. She uses this sort of design in creating her pretty shawl pins.

I am a big fantasy buff – books, movies, games, art, hobby. I’ve always loved drawing pictures of dragons and elves and mermaids and sometimes I work up the courage to roll that into my clay work. Lord of the Rings (both the books and the movies) is one of those works that’s inspired generations of fan art. Here’s a video tutorial for a pendant based on Anwen’s evenstar.

A more experience polymer clay artist could bling this out a bunch more with fancy foils, embedded pieces, mica powders and metal pastes I bet.

One of the big things in polymer clay is making hollow forms. Hollow forms can be made using two part forms, air for the filler or dissolving filler. I’ve used all of these and I’ve used cornstarch “gum” to make shapes and cover them in clay to wash out later. The cornstarch mixture isn’t usually the most malleable stuff – seriously, it’s a great science experience, mix water and cornstarch – and it cracks as it dries. You can add glycerin to it to make it into a more useful molding material but after that it gets a little more complicated.

Oozeq is a new mix of molding paste made just for this: to create armature forms for hollow works such as polymer clay artists would use. There’s an Etsy shop you can buy some to use and a Kickstarter to help fund the start up project. Sounds like neat stuff!

As Lavilla says in the first slide of this Flickr photo tutorial for a fish cane – it’s a more detailed version of the very good fish cane tutorial on Kim Korringa’s site. Which you should take a look at and enjoy, she does beautiful canework in fabulous colours.

The tutorial covers a variety of great caning techniques – using cut and insert methods as well inserting tubes into holes for the eyes. While it makes a fish it also helps you picture how to build up other sorts of faces and detailed images.

It’s no secret that I spend a lot of time admiring the work of polymer clay artists. Flickr is one of the venues I use to find and watch artists and the folks above are some of the most prolific and talented folk who appear in my timeline week in, week out. It’s not easy but it is doable to make one or two quite good clay pieces. To do it regularly is a whole other ball game.

If you have cornstarch and white PVA or Elmer’s glue, it’s easy to make it. You might be surprised to know that it also contains lemon juice.

Deep red roses, darker chain and little black crystals would make a lovely piece for your dramatic friend. Tiny pansies or lilies for your gardening lover.

These beads look like the composite or faceted eyes that some insects have. The use of mica powders gives the whole piece a nice shine and colour variation. Andrea Machler, the author, refers to the mesh she uses as tulle but it looks more like the mesh you get for wrappings or other fabrics here which makes me think you could do this sort of piece with any similar sized mesh and get a variety of effects.

You can find the first page in the tutorial here. To go through it just click through the photos using the right arrow.
