Making cute decorations for the holidays is one of those perfect clay things to do. And, really, Halloween has a lot of silly possibilities like this mummy. The tutorial by Phoebe Doehring on Sculpey.com makes a sweet little mummy figure. If you need a spookier one, thin and elongate the form a little and make a bit creepier expression in the bandages. Add a little grime with the acrylic paints.

This is the basic pumpkin making tutorial: orange and green clay, a tool to make marks. You can make fabulous little pumpkin beads, pumpkin decor. You can fancy it up by antiquing your pumpkins or turning them into little jack o’ lanterns.

If you decide to make pumpkins larger than 1/2 thick or so – bigger than beads, basically – consider using tightly packed foil for the insides. It’ll reduce how much clay you need and reduce the amount of time you need to bake for.

Kellie of MakeItWithMe has a tutorial for these adorable bird houses. She uses Fimo Soft for the project along with a little wire and mini dowels. The results are some cute little houses with springy birds. Yes, I know, autumn is showing it’s face in my part of the world but you could vary the colours on this project to suit whatever season or decor you needed. Right now, little harvest themed houses or pumpkins with little bats on springs might be the most perfect version.

I’m having a little fun the last few days finding more veggie and fruit clay pieces – as I try to put together autumn and harvest pieces in my real world claying – and here’s a watermelon cane tutorial that’s a little different than the average.

The tutorial is on a French page – here’s a link to the translated to English version – but the tutorial itself works entirely from the photos if you are at all familiar with caning. Cristalline, the author, has LOTS of tutorials on her blog.

Jennifer uses white original Sculpey, pottery tools and acrylic paints to turn plain cutlery into nifty Halloween decor. The tutorial outlines how to make the pumpkin like decorations, paint and antique them. You could use coloured polymer clay and skip the orange paint step – I like the antiquing effect so I’d still go with that. And I’d probably add little jack-o-lantern eyes and mouths to my pumpkins. You could make extra little pumpkins for table decor in the same way and coordinate with your serving ware.

Going along with the harvest theme and the fun of making polymer clay miniatures here’s a tutorial for putting together tomatoes, chilies and eggplants. The tutorial suggests air dry clay or polymer clay and either would work – particularly the coloured air dry clays like Makins. With polymer clay you wouldn’t need to worry about the white glue and could simply stick raw to raw or raw to cured clay. Use a little liquid polymer clay for backup.

To turn your tiny veggies into charms, embed a jump ring into the still raw clay and heal the seam. Add a little liquid clay over the spot on polymer clay. Finish as normal. These would make cute charms on a bracelet.

My affection for all things tomato right at the moment is due to all the tomato harvesting and babying going on here. We’re having an early frost so my kitchen is crowded with potted tomato plants and my yard has wrapped plants. After all the fuss, I’m pretty sure the polymer clay version is simpler if less tasty!

Actually, this is just a great, simple way to make shiny clay leaves. The tutorial uses metallic spraypaint from Rustoleum which may or may not be permanent for clay – some sprays make polymer clay stick after a while – but you could just as easily paint with a compatible paint or airbrush with it. Or use leaf or mica powders on the raw clay. Using real leaves with the polymer through the pasta machine makes a great and delicate impression so I’ll have to give this a shot – I usually just press my leaves into the clay or use my brayer a little.

If you want to use these as place cards for table settings you could sketch or stamp in names. I think a dish of these leaves would be fun as a decoration, basically a polymer clay bowl filler.

I consider coffee one of my daily rituals so coffee themed jewellery works for me. And in the craft jewellery world, personalized jewellery or pieces with quotes and inspirational words have been insanely popular for a few years. This mixed media piece by Amy Latta uses a little of each: a polymer clay coffee bean and cute, popular stamped metal pieces.

You could do your own version along whatever theme you prefer – or would like to give away: a favourite flower bead along with the recipients name or the flowers latin name, a favoured candy, a seasonal decoration and seasons greetings.

Where I live you can feel autumn inching in – the day time temperatures are still lovely but there’s a chill in the mornings and the evenings come so much earilier than they need to. School starts for the kidlet in a couple of days and I’m starting to rotate the fall coloured stock into my shop. I found a very autumn themed turtle on the Sculpey site. The tutorial has lots of great techniques in it: sculpting using an armature, antiquing, making things “cute”, adding embellishments.

This guys cute enough to sort of ease the pain. Sort of. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a warm, sunny autumn too, of course.
